Liberator Music and Infectious Music are thrilled to announce that alt-J (∆) have won the much coveted Barclaycard Mercury Prize. The Barclaycard Mercury Prize exists solely to champion music in the UK, mainly through the ‘Albums of the Year’ competition, which celebrates recorded music of all genres by British or Irish artists. The music on the album is the only thing taken into account. Immediately jumping onto Facebook, the band excitedly exclaimed “We bloody won the Mercury!!!”
The Mercury Prize winners recently toured Australia for the first time ever, completely selling out tickets for both their shows in 3 minutes. It was unanimously agreed by all in attendance that those shows would remain standout performances for many years to come.
The band will be returning in January/February 2013 to play at Laneway Festival, and in the meantime their incredible single, “Breezeblocks” continues to grow as one of the most popular songs of 2012, while the album, “An Awesome Wave” steadily makes its way up the charts. Last week the album peaked at #9 on the Australian iTunes Album Charts and #44 on the ARIA charts.
This prize is but another chapter in an awesome wave that alt-J continue to ride.
