Catherine Kelleher aka CATCALL is back with a sassy new single ART STAR taken from her stellar debut album THE WARMEST PLACE.
A highlight at her recent live shows and a fan favourite, ART STAR matches an irresistible disco track with playfully scathing lyrics sung in call and response between Catherine and co-writer/band member extraordinaire, Elston.
Essentially a diss-track about an oh-so-immature boy who takes himself a little too seriously, the song was actually inspired by true events of a date gone wrong:
“I went on a date with an artist and he ended up being a complete douche bag. I was relaying the story to Elston while we were finishing off the other album tracks and we decided to write something new.”
With a laid-back vibe and catchy-yet-simple chorus, the track is in line with Catherine’s past as a punk singer and draws on influence from a couple of great disco-punk pioneers of the 80s:
“I had been listening to a lot of ESG and Delta 5 at the time, so really wanted to channel that vibe on a song. It was really fun to write a bratty punk/disco track.”
It’s been a big year for Ms Kelleher, with her debut THE WARMEST PLACE receiving accolades from critics the world over and being recently named one of the Herald Sun’s best Australian albums of 2012 so far.
“This is sledgehammer pop for the complexities we play down. It’s heartbreaking, affirming, and at times irritatingly likeable. It’s a record to retreat to, against which you can warm your hands and feel consoled, but also alive.” – The Vine
