TZU’s fourth LP Millions of Moments was released last month to widespread approval. A more mature and innovative offering than the band’s past work, not to mention a somewhat darker one, Millions of Moments takes listeners on an atmospheric journey through the hardships of Australia’s past. (By now, we all know that the album is based on the time-travelling of Chronos user Persephone, right?)
TZU’s first two singles from the album ‘Beginning of the End’ and ‘Beautiful’ both found a home on the airwaves of Triple J and community radio across the nation upon release.
The band’s new single is ‘Nowhere Home’, a frantic, upbeat pop gem. As Joel puts it, ‘Nowhere is about being stranded in time, stranded in Nauru, stranded in the inbox of someone’s misconceptions.’ But whilst the lyrical content reflects the sombre overtones of the album, the music is anything but. In this sense, ‘Nowhere Home’ is light to the album’s shade. This is TZU with party hats firmly in place, where pulsing, frenetic beats are backed by an inescapable groove – ‘a weapon of a tune when it comes to live shows and festivals’.
Millions of Moments sees TZU delving further into an electronic realm. Before the band set to work on the album, they set themselves some ‘creative limitations’.
‘Let’s make an ambitious record, let’s not cater to radio, let’s have more instrumentals and instrumental sections and most significantly, let’s not rap. This is a sink or swim album, an album where we leave some of our audience in the dust and do it because we as a group want the chance to challenge ourselves and those that listen to us in every conceivable way. I don’t know if we achieved that but at least we can say it was our plan all along.’
With complimentary reviews flowing in from all corners of the country, it would appear that TZU have indeed achieved what they set out to do.
‘We always knew TZU are not an average hip-hop crew, but this new record is 49% totally unexpected, 50% completely amazing and 1% freaking mental.’ – pagesdigital
‘Dance pop with an apocalyptic edge.’ – 8 out of 10, JMag
‘Fuses atmosphere with ambition.’ – Rolling Stone
‘TZU can obviously so anything. [They] have firmly redefined their sound, and it’s hard to remember what they were like before. This is what successful reinvention looks like.’’ – The Brag, NSW
‘Adefining statement from an ever-evolving band.’ – Beat Magazine, VIC
‘Evolution.’ – Rip It Up Magazine, SA
TZU are touring nationally now. Limited tickets are available to their remaining shows. But be quick!
