THROW YOUR ARMS AROUND ME

It’s hard sometimes, to gauge the impact of this song.. Certainly amongst all the tunes, this one has truly become ‘public property’..  it’s been recorded so many times in different forms. Essentially though, it is an acoustic folk ballad that can be sung ‘anywhere’.

The best songs I’ve written have felt ‘accidental’ at the time..  And ‘Arms’ really was an accident.. which is not to say I wasn’t looking for it. Definitely the business of songwriting is a constant search for meaning. It’s just that sometimes the best stuff creeps up on you when you aren’t looking!

HOLY GRAIL

which leads to the next accident! ‘Grail’ was written under duress in the Studio at a time when there were some seriously pissed off musicians within the ranks of H&C who believed the band was making a dud record. I happened at the time to be reading ‘The Passion’ by English writer Jeanette Winterson, which tells the tale, amongst other things, of Napoleon’s doomed march on Moscow in 1812. Now, the fact that I was reading a book in the midst of making a record is typical. I’ll often read in the studio to distract myself from the surrounding stress but on this occasion weirdly, the two struggles converged. The one in the book and the band’s struggle for identity. Holy Grail was the result. The fact that it has endured goes to the subject matter. It is an anthem to personal struggle ..

WHEN THE RIVER RUNS DRY

Well, this is probably the most misunderstood tune I’ve penned. Occasionally I’m asked what’s it about and when I say ‘Greed’ I’m met with the blank ‘oh..Really?’ Yes really. It’s always been a bit awkward. At the end of the 80’s there was an explosion of credit inside the Australian economy and cities started to expand at an enormous rate.. Money became suddenly expensive and there was a massive stock market crash in 1987. Many people were questioning the stability of capitalism as they do when this stuff happens.

Oddly, this song has lasted because it touches on the lives of ordinary people who often feel helpless in the face of global forces over which they have little control…
