‘CHINAH are the sound of new Copenhagen cool’ – i-D

Few bands in recent years have been greeted with as much as excitement as Copenhagen’s CHINAH. Following the release of their first two EPs, Once The Lights Are On and Hints, the band are now ready to release their debut album, ANYONE.

CHINAH released ‘Yeah Right’ in June, a seductive teaser from ANYONE. The debut album sees a slick and moody return to their R&B and alternative pop roots, and is astonishingly well crafted, intertwining fierce synths and fizzy electronic production with drowsy R&B vocals.

ANYONE is trying to capture the feeling of disconnection. The gap between the inner and outer world, the physical reality and the digital connection. In a constantly shifting world, vulnerability is often looked upon as a sign of weakness. To be strong is associated with staying unaffected and in control. The album tries to embrace the weakness of human beings and the mixed feelings we constantly have towards the world, ourselves and other people.”

Fine Glindvad, Simon Kjær and Simon Andersson originally formed in 2014 as a folk outfit, before making waves with a number of synth pop hits such as ‘We Go Back’ and ‘Away From Me’. Now, the Danish trio are experimenting with artistic minimalism and synthesised R&B production on their debut LP. Throughout the album’s creative process, Fine took the unorthodox approach of both writing and recording her vocals whilst fully horizontal on a sofa, capturing the natural fluidity and reflective essence of the album.

CHINAH have picked up serious critical acclaim amongst elite tastemakers, including DIY Magazine, Pigeons & Planes, and i-D, plus BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, and have raced to over ten million streams on Spotify. The band have played some of the hottest festivals worldwide, including SXSW and The Great Escape, with more to come in 2019.
