Lilac Everything; A Project by Emma Louise - Album Art

EMMA LOUISE
‘MEXICO’
(out now through Liberation Records)

Emma Louise’s fresh new offering, ‘Mexico’, is a song of two parts. The opening half undulates with an almost overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and desperation, before blooming into a joyous and uplifting celebration of life and love lost.

The song’s two-fold sentiment was unintentional but welcome. Emma began writing ‘Mexico’ during a particularly bleak period in Melbourne. Wishing to escape the slump, she booked a flight to Mexico on a whim, touching down just three days later, and during her stay underwent a personal (and musical) reinvigoration.

“If you listen to Mexico you can tell I wrote half of it when I was sad in Melbourne and the other half when I was having a great time in Mexico. I think it’s a good introduction to the album. It starts off as what could end up being a ballad and then explodes into something different and colourful and full of surprises. It has that light and shade element that the rest of the album has.

“I wrote the album from a dark place and then managed to attract so much light. It’s that mixture that really satisfied me in expressing myself in it.”

‘Mexico’ is the second song to be revealed from Emma’s third album Lilac Everything; A Project by Emma Louise, following on from album opener ‘Wish You Well’. It’s also significant in the genesis of the record, being the birthplace of the album itself, where most of the material was written. Lilac Everything was later recorded at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle with Tobias Jesso Jnr at the helm as producer.

First cut ‘Wish You Well’ has turned heads not just for its mature, honest songwriting, but also its bold take on modern day music. Much has now been said of the pitched down vocal effect that Emma used throughout Lilac Everything that has captured the attention of fellow creatives, media and fans alike, and makes for a wholly unique and novel listening experience.

‘By inhabiting this character, Louise is free to explore a whole new side to her craft, and ‘Wish You Well’ proves it to be an exciting one.’ – Pitchfork

‘Today’s added track, ‘Wish You Well’, makes me think of Adele no less… The song is incredible.’
Matt Wilkinson, Beats 1

‘Vivid, dramatic…’ – triple J

Emma will perform a debut show at Zebulon in LA later this month, before returning to Australia closer to album release.
