HATCHIE
‘WITHOUT A BLUSH’
(taken from Keepsake album out Friday 21 June through Ivy League Records)

Ivy League Records are elated to announce that Brisbane artist Hatchie, aka Harriette Pilbeam, will release her highly anticipated debut album, Keepsake, on Friday, 21 June. Keepsake is available to pre-order now on digital, CD and vinyl formats.  To celebrate, Hatchie has revealed the gorgeous, industrial-leaning first single ‘Without A Blush’ alongside the video (directed by Joe Agius), and announced May shows at Northcote Social Club (Melbourne), The Lansdowne (Sydney) and The Foundry (Brisbane).

Hatchie says,

“I’m excited to start the next chapter of Hatchie with ‘Without A Blush’, the first single from my album Keepsake. It’s the perfect introduction to the feelings and sounds on the rest of the record, which I can’t wait to finally start sharing on tour!”

On lead single ‘Without a Blush’, jagged guitar riffs and woozy rhythms meet in a sprawling piece of industrial-pop, with Hatchie’s gorgeous airy vocal channelling loss and longing, regret and self-doubt. Elsewhere on Keepsake, Hatchie brings an unlikely transcendence to the tenderest of moments. Throughout the album, Hatchie’s kaleidoscopic sonic palette draws out distinct moods and tones, continually revealing her depth and imagination as a musician and songwriter.

Hatchie’s exceptional debut EP, 2018’s Sugar & Spice – which yielded the singles ‘Sugar & Spice’, ‘Try’, ‘Sure’, ‘Bad Guy’ and ‘Sleep’ – delivered the sonic equivalent of falling deliriously in love: a sustained rush of feeling, rendered in swoony melodies, gauzy guitar tones and endlessly hypnotic layers of sound. Sugar & Spice garnered widespread acclaim from international music media, including NME, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit. Popjustice, Wonderland, The Guardian UK, triple j, FBi, Spotify, Apple Music, Purple Sneakers, VICE, TheMusic and more, with Pitchfork dubbing Hatchie the ‘dream-pop idol of tomorrow’.

Hatchie experiments with countless new textures on Keepsake, exploring everything from industrial to new wave to dance-pop, handling each with understated elegance and pure, powerful feeling. Teaming up once again with Sugar & Spice producer John Castle (Cub Sport, Vance Joy, Jack River), Keepsake was recorded in his studio in Melbourne’s north.

There’s a self-possessed spirit infusing all of Keepsake, which ultimately serves as a document of a particularly kinetic moment in Hatchie’s life.

“I’m not much of a nostalgic person when it comes to memories, but I do have a tendency to hold on to certain things, like tickets from the first time I went someplace on holiday,” Hatchie says, reflecting on the album’s title.

“It made sense to me to call the record that, at a time when I’m going to probably end up with a lot of keepsakes – and in a way, this whole album is almost like a keepsake in itself.”
