JACK RIVER
‘ PALO ALTO ’
Out Wednesday 28 September 2016 Through I OH YOU

Today, we are incredibly excited to share “Palo Alto’, the brilliant new single from the newest member of the I OH YOU family, Jack River. The track is the second to be released from her forthcoming EP Highway Songs No.2 which is set to be unleashed on the world next Friday (October 7).

Jack River is the alias of Holly Rankin who hails from Forster on the NSW Mid North Coast. Receiving its world premiere via Linda Marigliano on triple j ‘Palo Alto’ further reinforces the immense talent that is Jack River. Rankin describes how the song came to life:

“I wrote and recorded Palo Alto through so many times in my life that the song became a kind of folder for memories and sentiments over a long stretch of time. I started writing it in my hometown, then continued it in Sydney (my friend lived in a building called Palo Alto), and then wrote the rest in different trips to the studio.

“It was always destined to be sun-drenched and gritty and gilded in synths and electric guitars – I wanted to find the line between the 90’s, early 2000’s and now, and blend all my dreams of a highway song into one. The moment this song came together, production-wise, it felt like the beginning of Jack River. It’s about letting go but not giving up, melancholic-but-sure endings, and people realising magic when it’s too late – even though you knew it all along.”

Earlier this month Jack River turned heads when she performed at BIGSOUND to a capacity room full of fans and media alike. The show , which was announced at the eleventh hour, saw Rankin and her band give the room a taste of what to expect when she hits the road on Dope Lemon’s east coast shows in October/November.

‘Palo Alto’ is a collaborative production between Jack River and John Castle, with additional instrumentation from Xavier Dunn, who has had a hand in many of Rankin’s creations including lead single ‘Talk Like That’  which received reviews filled with praise along with strong radio support from triple j and FBI. The single also clocked over 300,000 streams across all platforms, an outstanding effort from an artist who is only just getting started.

Growing up in a coastal town, her unbreakable ties with her family and the environment are the cornerstones to Rankin’s musical inspiration. Along with writing music, Holly has just announced the ‘Grow Your Own’ festival, which she curated. The festival will take place on the 23rd of December in her home town of Forster.

Rankin’s experiences to date, coupled with her talents as an outstanding producer (Holly features as a producer on each song from the EP), multi-instrumentalist and gifted songwriter and singer have all intertwined to form the artist she is today.

With her EP ‘Highway Songs No.2’ out next week, 2016 is shaping up to be the break-out year for Jack River.
