Fresh from a run of dates in the US – including an appearance at Lollapalooza,  supporting Alt-J at the O2 Arena and landing a spot on the BBC Radio 1 playlist –Blaenavon return with new single, ‘Prague ‘99’ – premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac.

The track is taken from a new EP of the same name, and features a trio of brand new recordings (‘The Monte Carlo Kid’, ‘A Death in the Family’ and ’12’) all written at different points in the band’s exciting career.

The extended player is a celebration of the band’s breakthrough 2017, neatly tying up the loose ends of a carefully built past and looking toward an exciting, vital and bright future. The EP follows the band’s highly anticipated and critically acclaimed debut record That’s Your Lot, released in April this year.

The EP’s lead track ‘Prague ’99’ received its premiere via Annie Mac in her coveted BBC Radio 1 slot, building on the demand for the band at the station which saw post-album single ‘Lonely Side’ land Blaenavon their first Playlist – a rare accolade for a band making credible and revitalising indie music today.

While That’s Your Lot – recorded by Grammy winner Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Bombay Bicycle Club) – zoned in on the experiences Ben Gregory, Frank Wright andHarris McMillan had growing up together as a band, drawing on friendship, sadness and learning to love an awkward, often uncomfortable self; ‘Prague ’99’ gives something back to those fans who have accompanied Blaenavon on their journey so far.

Ben explains, “’Prague ’99’ is the people’s choice. Whenever we play it, whether amazingly or shite, to thousands or to no-one, it feels important. It’s been a game-changer for us and for the people that care about our music. In the 3 b-sides we’ve offered you an insight into our diversity. ‘The Monte Carlo Kid’ is spritely, ridiculous, but still a humungous tune. ‘A Death in the Family’ is an old fan favourite that meant too much to us to let slip away, whilst ’12’ is the saddest song I’ll ever write. A true fuck my life. Enjoy.” |
