Gordi Beneath The Reservoir

A year on from the release of her acclaimed debut LP Reservoir, Gordi is excited to unveil Beneath The Reservoir, a stunning collection of five stripped-back reworks of her favourite cuts from the album. Its release coincides with Gordi’s upcoming national solo tour alongside Memphis artist Julien Baker, kicking off on 17 February with a special hometown show in Canowindra, NSW.

Led by the spacious ‘Something Like This’ and also including the singles ‘Heaven I Know’ and ‘I’m Done’, Beneath The Reservoir is a beautiful listen that finds Gordi re-discovering the meaning and feeling behind the songs, presenting them in a whole new light.

“I never thought I would get to know my own songs as a listener might. As if I am hearing them new for the first time and they sound different and I am discovering what they mean. This happens for me through touring. I’ll be playing the same song for the 100th time and suddenly I hear the same chord and same word in an entirely different way. The most unsurprising realm in which this happens, is when I’m playing a solo show. Because I have to get rid of the way the song is arranged and just play it in whatever way I possibly can using two hands and one set of vocal chords.

“That is, in essence, the aim of this collection of reworked songs. To strip it all away and to give a solo performance with all its imperfections and feeling. To remember that they are all just songs. That is what I connect to as a listener and a fan of music – the songs and the feeling.” – Gordi

The EP was entirely performed, arranged, engineered and produced by Gordi in her Sydney living room and showcases the production nous adapted from her time working closely alongside the likes of Alex Somers, Tim Anderson, Ali Chant and Bon Iver’s production crew in Wisconsin.

Gordi will perform her songs live in this new form on her upcoming 6-date tour with Julien Baker. It’ll be her first run of dates since supporting Sam Smith in Australia and New Zealand on his sold-out arena tour in November 2018. Over the past year, in amongst finishing up her medicine studies, Gordi has also toured alongside the likes of Bon Iver, Ásgeir, Fleet Foxes, Metronomy, Gang of Youths and Missy Higgins.

Since the release of Reservoir Gordi has been developing a sense of community around her music, stating that she’d like to become a “more collaborative artist”. A month long residency at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right found her performing with friend/collaborator The Tallest Man On Earth, and on this same trip to the US, she played an improvisational set with Julien Baker at Eaux Claires Festival – where she also joined The National and Bon Iver on stage.

To add to this, Gordi was one of two featured artists on Troye Sivan’s new album Bloom (the other being Ariana Grande), co-writing the track ‘Postcard’ on a piano together in LA. She also shared reworks of the single ‘Can We Work It Out’ by pop icon Shura and Frank Ocean collaborator RAC, which were released complete with visual accompaniments.

It was a massive 2018 for Gordi, who wrapped up the year by taking home the inaugural Songwriter Award at the Australian Women in Music Awards. With a number of incredible songs under her belt, Gordi’s music has been streamed well over 10 million times. Her debut album also was nominated for Australian Album of the Year at the J Awards.
