The Power 50

The Mushroom Group congratulate Michael Gudinski, Matt Gudinski, Mick & Anthea Newton, Linda Bosidis, Johann Ponniah and Damian Slevison on today being announced in the prestigious ‘The Power 50’ list – an annual list of ‘Australian Music’s Most Influential’.

Michael Gudinski, AM, returned to the #1 ranking for the fourth time since the list’s inception in 2012. The accolade follows a momentous year for the Executive Chairman of the Mushroom Group and its music and entertainment brands. Highlights included Frontier Touring ranking #3 in the world in Billboard’s End Of Year Top Promoters list, breaking the long-standing record for the biggest tour in Australasian history with Ed Sheeran’s stadium run, the return of Kylie Minogue’s recordings to the Mushroom label fold and subsequent #1 album and helping to sign the Teskey Brothers to Ivy League Records.

Michael Gudinski said of the #1 ranking today,

“It’s a huge honour to be back in the number one spot of the Power 50 and I’m very humbled. I’m immensely proud of the success of the Mushroom Group in 2018 – I’ve often said that you’re only as good as the team you have around you and it couldn’t be truer in the past year. It excites me immensely that many of our team at Mushroom will become the future leaders of the Australian music industry. Their passion, and the strength and diversity of the artists that we work with, are what inspire me to do what I do every day.”

Matt Gudinski retains his position in the Power 50 Top 10, taking out the #8 spot for the second year in a row. 2018 saw Matt at the helm of another massively successful year of RnB Fridays Live (AU) and Friday Jams Live (NZ), with the stadium tour attracting record crowds and ticket sales in excess of 200,000, cementing it as Australia’s biggest annual touring event. A major focus of 2018 for Matt, working closely with Michael, was developing new partnerships for Mushroom, while continuing to strengthen the groups existing business interests. New areas of growth have included a joint venture with Underground Cinema in the form of Immersive Cinema and key brand partnerships through Mushroom Creative House. Significantly, Matt was instrumental throughout 2018 in driving the development and expansion of Mushroom’s roster of management and label interests, with some notable signings up and coming star Fergus James and the signing of Willaris K to Soothsayer.

Mick & Anthea Newton have jointly taken out the #19 spot, after capping off a huge year with a day on the green. The 2017/2018 summer season saw Mick and Anthea and the Roundhouse team put on 30 shows, with 45 acts performing in front of 229,523 fans. 2018 also saw the duo lock down dates with Florence & The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kylie Minogue and Elton John, ensuring 2019 is set to be one of their biggest years yet.

Linda Bosidis makes her well-deserved debut into the Power 50 in the #33 spot. Late 2018 saw the announcement that Linda would be stepping up into the role of Managing Director of Mushroom Music Publishing. With 20 years of experience at MMP, Linda was an obvious successor to the role, and has been instrumental in shaping the careers of countless artists including Violent Soho, Julia Jacklin, Gordi, Hatchie, Jack River, Nick Murphy, Middle Kids, Adalita, Archie Roach, Rowland S Howard, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and King Gizzard. A standout of 2018 was Linda’s moving and profound keynote speech for One On One for International Women’s Day.

The 2018 rankings see Johann Ponniah climb from last year’s #43 position to a top 40 ranking at #36. The head of I OH YOU has guided the business to yet another massive year across its label and management arm, Converge Management. Critically acclaimed releases from Jack River and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, the continued world proliferation of DMA’S and a top 5 album debut for DZ Deathrays were just a few highlights that were capped off by seven ARIA nominations.

Coming in at #45 in the Power 50 is Liberation Records’ Damian Slevison. Promoted into the role of Managing Director for Liberation, 2018 saw Damo lead a rebrand for Mushroom’s longest standing label, while continuing to apply his considerable A&R talents to the domestic label roster. Stand outs in 2018 included a #1 debut for Vance Joy’s Gold certified Nation of Two, which finished 2018 as the second highest selling Australian album of the year, Gold singles for Mansionair & DD Dumbo, and Emma Louise’s powerful concept album Lilac Everything.
