Melbourne five-piece Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have been awarded the Mushroom Music Publishing Recording Grant 2017. As the fifth recipients of the annual grant; Joe White, Fran Keaney, Marcel Tussie and brothers Tom and Joe Russo will receive the non-recoupable recording grant of $10,000 to help fund their debut album.

Established in 2013, the Mushroom Music Publishing Recording Grant was created to assist artists with costs associated with funding their recordings. Linda Bosidis, Head of A&R, said “We at Mushroom Music Publishing want to hear more recordings of original material.  We want to support career progression and strengthen our local creative industry.”

Born from late night jam sessions in singer/guitarist Fran Keaney’s bedroom and honed in the thrumming confines of Melbourne’s live music venues, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have a unique sound built from multi-track melodies curled around charging drums and addictive baselines.

“Thanks Mushroom Music, this grant is a huge help. We’re currently putting the finishing touches on the debut album and looking forward to taking it all around the US, Europe and Oz next year!” – Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

With the recent release of The French Press EP and the earlier Talk Tight EP, their relentless energy is carried throughout recordings and has lead the band to success in the US and UK.

“Rolling Blackouts C.F. make the kind of crisp, unfussy rock music that’s been all too absent in recent years.” – Stereogum

“Rip-roaring tracks that move by their own logic, any one of which could be a single and all of which leave you wanting more in the best way possible” – Pitchfork, 8.0 review rating

“The French Press EP sounds fresh at every turn – melancholy riffs and a thumping undertone of bass lay the foundations for the band’s trio of vocalists’ earnest tones.” – Stack

Last year’s winner, The Laurels, released their second album Sonicology (out through Rice is Nice) in October 2016 with assistance from the Grant. Past winners include Fraser A. Gorman (2013), D.D Dumbo (2014) and Dorsal Fins (2015).

With a history of more than 40 years, Mushroom Music Publishing is the leading independent publishing company in Australia and New Zealand.
